Heating Systems

Here at Miller & Miller Boatyard we sell and service both Espar and Webasto diesel heating systems.  Depending on your specific installation requirements we can recommend whichever brand will be best suited for your needs.

Overview of Heating Systems

An air system provides almost instantaneous heat.  Less expensive to install then a hydronic system, air systems are composed of: 1) The heater itself, usually located in the engine room or an out of the way locker  2) Flexible ducting that runs throughout the boat  3) And registers in each heated space.  Registers allow you to control both the amount and the direction of warm air. The whole system is controlled by a centrally located thermostat.  While being very fuel efficient, these units produce warmth within seconds of being turned on and allow you to quickly warm your cold hands and feet.

Our certified heater technicians are some of the best in the business.

A hydronic system (hot water/antifreeze circulates throughout the boat by way of hoses and fans blow across heat exchangers in each heating space) is somewhat more complicated to install but can provide many benefits over a forced-air system.  A hydronic system allows for the temperature in each heated space to be controlled by a separate thermostat (you can set your sleeping areas for 62˚ while keeping your main salon at a more comfortable 70˚).  Other benefits include: 1) Provides for even heat, even in larger vessels 2) The ability to heat domestic/potable water by way of a heat exchanger 3) Utilization of engine heat to heat cabins reducing fuel consumption
4) Possibility for radiant heating - for example heated bunks or drying racks, just to name a few.  In installations where running the larger diameter ducting of an air system is not possible, a hydronic system can be a practical alternative.

A heater discreetly tucked away in a lazarette takes up very little space

A well-designed heating system can make the difference between comfortable, year- round cruising and cold, miserable days on the water.  Our experienced technicians can plan a system that meets all your specific needs.
